The Flint River flows right through the heart of Bainbridge and Decatur County. The river level is maintained the Corps of Engineers as they control the Chattahoochee Dam, located approximately 40 miles south of Bainbridge. The inland barge terminal handles both bulk and liquid cargo, making shipping by barge a viable option for finished products and/or raw materials.

  • Bainbridge is located just 128 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Bainbridge, Georgia is Georgia's first Inland Port City.
  • The Georgia Ports Authority operates an inland barge terminal in Bainbridge - handling both bulk and liquid cargo.
  • The Corps of Engineers monitors and maintains river levels and depths, including dredging of the river bottom when needed.

AIR TRANSPORTATION

Decatur County Airport features two runways. The main runway is lighted and 5,500 feet long and has a Localizer Approach and MALSR Medium Intensity Approach Lighting System with Runway Alignment Indicator Lights. There is a secondary runway which is a little shorter at 5,000 feet long, but is not very well marked. In 2005, the airport plans on opening its new FBO facility. Southern Hospitality is abundant as you will find if you use our airport.

Even though our airport may not be a bustling mega-airport, we offer features that many of your smaller airports do not. Check out these features:

  • Aviation fuel (100LL Avgas and Jet-A available at the pump. Jet-A is also available on truck. AvGas will be available on Truck soon)
  • Aircraft parking (ramp/tiedown)
  • Passenger terminal and lounge (not extravagant, but adequate)

  • Courtesy cars (free for pilots to use in the local area)
  • Public telephone (available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week)

TRAIN TRANSPORTATION

CSX offers mainline rail service into Bainbridge. Georgia Southwestern Railroad provides shortline service to portions of the county including the
Decatur County Industrial Park.

The Georgia Southwestern Railroad has multiple rail lines across Southwestern Georgia and Southeastern Alabama with one of the lines running from Bainbridge, GA to Columbus, GA.

GDOT (Georgia Department of Transportation), owns 3 of their 5 lines. GDOT recently (2004 and 2005) completed a significant "upgrade" project on the rail line that runs between between Cuthbert, GA and Lynn, GA (just north of Bainbridge).

Significant items upgraded were:

  • New ties were installed.
  • Miscellaneous general maintenance was performed.
  • Bridges were repaired as necessary.
  • Three (3) at-grade railroad crossings were improved. These crossing improvements should be the most noticed by the general public as it will result in a smoother road crossing. Some of these railroad crossing were quite rough and caused traffic to slow down well below the posted speed limit to cross them safely.
